The Idea

The idea behind the Young Euro Connect project is to provide a fresh impulse from Berlin to enrich the Europe debate: our aim is to take a new look at the opportunities Europe has to offer, and encourage an emotional appreciation of these possibilities. Our wish, that Europe should again be perceived, discussed and envisioned as a vibrant, motivating subject that affects us all, is not solely aimed at the participants themselves, but also those who attend the readings and all those who read or hear the Young Euro Connect texts via the media and in publications.

Created in 2005 as a political-literary extension to the already hugely successful Young Euro Classic music festival, the Young Euro Connect project has itself been writing its own modest success story in the last couple of years.

From the very beginning the idea behind the project was to make a fruitful contribution to the conversation about Europe and to encourage young people to think about a subject to which they might not otherwise be inclined to give much consideration: Europe and its values.

In 2005 eight young authors mapped out their visions on the theme “Europa 2025”. Each year from 2006 to 2008 twelve authors explored the meaning for today’s Europe of the ideals of “Liberty” (2006), “Equality” (2007) and “Fraternity” (2008). One of Germany’s most prestigious newspapers, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, described the essays penned within the framework of the project as a “literary mosaic” which had “more to say about Europe than all the history books and political speeches.” A book of Young Euro Connect essays from 2005 to 2008 was published in February 2009.

In 2009 Young Euro Connect addresses nine young journalists from a range of EU member countries who will be probing the process of the implementation of European rulings in everyday life and the extent to which their impact is felt by individual European citizens. We are looking for the “stories behind the law” to show how the people of Europe actually experience decisions made by the European Union.

Young Euro Connect is an encounter project. It aims to promote dialogue between participants and audience, as well as with members of the jury and journalists. In this way, the project hopes to enhance the participants' appreciation of other European countries, of national visions, fears and problems that perhaps do not affect their own countries. It is hoped that the encounter, dialogue and exchange between participants and audience will stimulate young Europeans to consider the concept of Europe, as well as inspire an active commitment to their respective countries, and Europe as a whole.
